Building a Computer Network for a Small Business – From start to finish!

Description:         This two day information packed instructor-led workshop provides students with hands-on training needed to effectively install and configure a Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 network complete with both Windows XP and Windows Vista clients.

 

Days:                      2

 

Prerequisites:    This course is an excellent choice for individuals who have basic knowledge of Windows systems and would like to learn how to install, configure, and manage a small computer network for their business themselves without having the need to rely on third-party vendors.

Before attending this course, students must have working knowledge of the following:

·         Windows Operating System

·         Using the mouse and keyboard

·         Navigating through the Windows operating system

·         Creating folders, moving and copying files, opening and closing programs.

·         Using any of the Microsoft Office Applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or Access

 

 

 

Unit 1: Introduction to networks

This unit introduces you to networking in general. It discusses network terminology and ends with a demonstration of how networks work.

Lab 1: Network Overview

This lab will demonstrate the various components that make up a network and how each component works as discussed in this unit.

Unit 2: Windows Server 2003 Installation and configuration

This unit will explore the installation of Windows Server 2003 and prepare it for other Windows clients to connect to it.

Lab 2: Install Windows Server 2003

This lab will allow the students to complete a Windows Server 2003 installation, configure and test it.

Unit 3: Windows XP Installation and configuration

This unit will explore the installation of Windows XP and connect it to a server. It will also explore the way in which Windows XP machines can be used to connect to each other without the need of a server computer.

Lab 3: Install and configure Windows XP

This lab will allow the students to complete a Windows XP installation and configure it to be connected to a Windows Server 2003 computer. It will also allow students to connect to other Windows XP computers without connecting to the server to demonstrate Windows XP’s workgroup networking capabilities.

Unit 4: Windows Server 2008 Installation and configuration

This unit will explore the installation of Windows Server 2008 and prepare it for other Windows clients to connect to it.

Lab 4: Install Windows Server 2008

This lab will allow the students to complete a Windows Server 2008 installation, configure and test it.

Unit 5: Windows Vista Ultimate Installation and configuration

This unit will explore the installation of Windows Vista and connect it to a server. It will also explore the way in which Windows Vista machines can be used to connect to each other without the need of a server computer.

Lab 5: Install and configure Windows Vista Ultimate

This lab will allow the students to complete a Windows Vista installation and configure it to be connected to a Windows Server 2003 or a Windows Server 2008 computer. It will also allow students to connect to other Windows Vista and Windows XP computers without connecting to the server.

Unit 6: File Sharing

This unit will show how to configure file sharing on a Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 computer along with Windows XP and Windows Vista computer. It will also demonstrate some of the basics of network and file system security.

Lab 6: Configure File Sharing

This lab will allow the students to configure file sharing on Windows Systems – both server and workstation. It will also expose students with some of the basics of file system security as it relates to file sharing on local systems as well as over the network.

Unit 7: Patch management

This unit will explore what service packs are and the basics of patch management. It will also demonstrate to the students how to attain, install, configure, and test patches successfully.

Lab 7: Install and configure system patches

This lab will demonstrate to the students where to attain service packs, various options available within the Windows system to apply service packs, expose the students to automated patch management, and testing a recently patched system for success or failure.

Unit 8: Solving Typical Networking Issues

This unit will introduce to the students tools and methods available within Windows operating system to allow its administrators to address production issues as they occur and use proactive means to avoid issues from occurring.

Lab 8: Problem Resolution

This lab will allow students to evaluate system architecture and methodically isolate problems along with learning to fix many of the common issues.

Unit 9: Introduction to virtualization

This demonstration module provides a brief operations-level introduction to Vmware Server, a completely free product by VMware, which allows you to maximize your hardware utilization and productivity.
