Course Description:

 

This Giving Performance Reviews course is designed to assist managers in the creation and presentation of employee performance reviews. To that end, this class discusses common review topics, performance review do's and don'ts, manager/employee interaction and the performance review process

 

This class is a component of the IT Management and Leadership Professional Certification. (ITMLE©)

 

Course Objectives:

 

Upon completion of the Giving Performance Reviews course, students will be able to:

 

  • Utilize performance reviews for staff motivation and recognition
  • Influence staff retention and satisfaction
  • Have a thorough understanding of performance review processes
  • Write effective, motivating goals for IT staff
  • Improve IT environment and culture

a.    The importance of giving quality performance reviews

b.    Types of reviews including narrative and quantitative

c.    Topics include prior period performance, goal setting and personal attributes

 

    II.          Preparing a Review

a.    The importance of feedback throughout the year, not just at formal review time

b.    The value of using concrete examples, rather than vague generalities

c.    The need for accuracy and an understanding of the review from the employee's perspective

 

   III.          Giving/Presenting a Review

a.    Being objective not emotional, constructive not critical, respectful and thoughtful

b.    The importance of two way discussion, rather then a one-way soliloquy

c.    The importance of making goals, plans and objectives actionable and measurable

 

  IV.          The Performance Review Cycle

a.    Overview of the annual review process including the steps, participants, and processes

b.    The relationship with salary planning, budgeting and other internal company processes

 

   V.          Technical Review Topics

a.    User Interaction,

b.    Project Deliverables,

c.    Technical Knowledge,

d.     and more…

 

  VI.          Food for Thought

a.    An employee does great work, but has personal hygiene issues. Is it included in the review?

b.    An employee with performance issues is a personal friend. How do you write their review?
