Introduction To American Sign Language (ASL)
American Sign Language (ASL) is the distinctive language of the Deaf community and is quickly becoming one of the most widely used languages in the United States.
This three day course consists of a preparatory phase to attune students to communication in the manual-visual mode, followed by instruction and practice in vocabulary, sentence structure, elementary conversation, and literature.
In this 3 day class you will learn:
- The 50 hand shapes of ASL, including the manual alphabet
- Numbers, Colors, Foods, Professions
- Basic nouns and verbs
- Non-manual components of ASL grammar including facial expression and body postures
- Feelings and emotions
- Discussion of regional and ethnic sign variations
At the conclusion of the course you will be able to form hundreds of clear sentences to enable you to communicate with clients, colleagues, students and friends.
Prerequisite: None
Materials: Binders with handouts will be provided. No other materials are needed. Students will be referred to websites and resources where they may enhance their learning.
